Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Olivia Arévalo Lomas
Olivia was the spiritual leader of the Shipibo Konibo indigenous peoples.
A wise Indigenous woman and grandmother, she was known for cultivating traditional medicine and the sacred songs of her people (Íkaros). Olivia Arevalo was an active defender of the cultural and environmental rights of her people. Olivia’s murder occurred in a context of territorial conflict between the Shipibo community and companies that desire to take over their land to cultivate palm oil.
Members of her community have said: “Her death is an aggression against the entire Shipibo community. She was the living memory of her people”.

The fight for a world full of workplaces that are free from of all forms of discrimination, stigma and exclusion is a worthy one. A world in which sex work is decriminalized and recognized as work is part of this.
A world where all workers have safe working conditions, dignified wages, and can enjoy the same rights like health care, pension pay, sick days, holidays, job security and more, no matter their gender, race, ethnicity, age or ability. Labor rights are feminist issues, and feminist unions play a key role in advancing the legal, labor and economic rights of all workers, especially migrant workers, domestic workers, informal workers and sex workers. These are folks who have most recently been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, its burdens of care, lockdowns, curfews and increased policing. Let us introduce you to the stories of feminists and union organizers that are fighting for better working conditions and better worlds for all.
2018: Apoyo a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen y desestabilicen
Este informe recuerda y celebra el primer año del nuevo plan estratégico de AWID, cuando dimos nuestros primeros pasos hacia los resultados deseados: el apoyo a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen, la impugnación de las agendas antiderechos, y la creación conjunta de realidades feministas.
Trabajamos con feministas para desestabilizar las agendas antiderechos, y logramos importantes victorias, peleadas y ganadas dentro del sistema de Naciones Unidas, cuando se logró la inclusión de lenguaje innovador sobre discriminación estructural, derechos sexuales y obligaciones de los Estados en una cantidad de resoluciones. Sí, el sistema multilateral está en crisis y necesita un sólido fortalecimiento, pero estas victorias son importantes, ya que contribuyen a la legitimidad de las demandas feministas, brindando a los movimientos feministas más puntos de presión y más impulso para promover nuestras agendas.
Ensayamos y pusimos a prueba distintas formas de construir conocimientos con los movimientos feministas a través de seminarios en línea, podcasts y conversaciones «en vivo». Desarrollamos guías de facilitación con educadorxs populares para recuperar saberes en pos de la justicia social y de género, incluso sobre un tópico tan aparentemente opaco como los flujos financieros ilícitos. Auspiciamos blogs y opiniones sobre cómo los grupos feministas obtienen fondos y recursos, y señalamos las amenazas que enfrentan nuestros sistemas de derechos humanos.
Dentro de AWID, pusimos en práctica y aprendimos de nuestro enfoque de liderazgo compartido, y relatamos la historia de las dificultades y tribulaciones de dirigir conjuntamente una organización global virtual. No tenemos una respuesta definitiva sobre cómo es un liderazgo feminista, pero un año más tarde sabemos que el compromiso continuo con la experimentación y el aprendizaje colectivos nos ha permitido seguir construyendo una organización con la cual nos entusiasma contribuir.
Al recordar este año, queremos agradecer a todxs nuestrxs amigxs y promotorxs, colegas y compañerxs, que han aportado su tiempo y han compartido su bagaje de conocimiento y sabiduría con nosotrxs. Queremos agradecer a nuestrxs afiliadxs, que han ayudado a construir nuestro plan estratégico y se han unido a nosotrxs para formular demandas feministas. No podríamos hacer este trabajo sin ustedes.

De la India, Janette era enérgica, extraordinaria, compasiva y amorosa.
Su intolerancia de la injusticia y su firme compromiso de defender los derechos de todas las personas la llevaron a trabajar en TARSHI (una ONG que trabaja en temas de la sexualidad y la salud y derechos sexuales y reproductivos) durante más de 15 años. Janette dirigió con destreza las finanzas, los recursos humanos y los aspectos operativos del trabajo de TARSHI, atravesando hábilmente la laberíntica burocracia a la que están sometidas las ONG indias.
Lxs integrantes de su equipo recuerdan que «Ella se quedaba vigilando, de manera que pudiéramos seguir el rumbo en aguas abiertas. Mujer de muchos talentos, Janette no sólo nos ayudó a conseguir nuestra propia oficina sino que también la diseñó para una utilización óptima». Amaba viajar y a los animales, y estaba interesada en la terapia asistida por animales.

El salario mínimo de Georgia se encuentra en un porcentaje inferior al de todos los países del mundo. Esta realidad afecta mayoritariamente a las mujeres.
El país no solo tiene una brecha salarial de género significativa, sino que las mujeres también trabajan más horas y más horas no reguladas antes de irse a casa para ocuparse de las tareas domésticas y de sus familias. No hay licencia por maternidad, no hay aumentos de salario por horas extras, no hay seguro de desempleo, y no hay licencias por enfermedad u otra protección social. Presionados por organizaciones occidentales, los partidos políticos oligárquicos georgianos han estado implementando reformas que están destruyendo el estado de bienestar, aumentando las medidas de austeridad y empeorando la explotación de lxs trabajadorxs, todo para los beneficios de grandes corporaciones que aplauden al país por su "facilidad para hacer negocios". Los medios de comunicación, cooptados por intereses privados y corporativos, están sesgados sobre estos temas o los silencian. La organización sindical sigue siendo una de las pocas opciones para luchar por los derechos humanos básicos y para hacer que el Estado y las empresas rindan cuentas ante las violaciones y persecuciones diarias y generalizadas contra lxs trabajadorxs, especialmente contra las mujeres.

2022: Transiciones, Inspiración & Poder Colectivo
Nuestro plan estratégico “Realidades Feministas” completó su último año a finales de 2022. Durante los últimos cinco años, este intrépido marco nos empujó a ir más allá de los futuros feministas y a reconocer las soluciones y formas de vida feministas que ya existen aquí y ahora. Realidades que deben ser enaltecidas, celebradas y popularizadas. El proyecto de historias multimedia Las Economías Feministas que Amamos y el centro de conocimiento Our Resource sobre modos autónomos de dotar de recursos al activismo feminista son sólo dos ejemplos de este trabajo visionario, siempre profundamente colectivo y en colaboración con diversos movimientos feministas.

Juana Raymundo
Membre de la communauté autochtone maya ixil, Juana était infirmière professionnelle et coordinatrice du Comité de développement des agriculteurs (CODECA)
CODECA est une organisation de défense des droits humains composée d'agriculteurs autochtones et vouée à la promotion des droits à la terre et du développement rural pour les familles autochtones dans la microrégion de Nebaj Quiché. Elle a d'abord rejoint le CODECA en tant que membre de la Juventud de CODECA (branche de la jeunesse).
Au moment de son décès, elle venait d’être élue membre du Comité exécutif du Mouvement de libération des peuples (MLP).
Le corps de Juana a été retrouvé par des voisins au bord d’une petite rivière sur la route située près de Nebaj et du village d’Acambalam, au Guatemala. Selon le CODECA, son corps portait des traces de torture.

Biography
Isabel is a feminist from the United Kingdom with over a decade of experience in feminist responses to fascisms, fundamentalisms, and anti-rights trends. At AWID, her work centers on knowledge-building and has included leading the production of the Rights at Risk series in collaboration with the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). She holds a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and previously worked with Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML). She is passionate about cross-movement work, movement-centered knowledge-building, and the use of creative expression to disrupt systems of oppression. Outside of work, Isabel is active in various disability justice spaces for collective care, learning, and advocacy.

Madiha El Safty
Madiha was a prominent Professor of Sociology who actively engaged with civil society as an advocate for women’s rights in the Arab region.
She chaired the Alliance for Arab Women and was a member of the Committee on Civil Society and the Committee on the Development of Minia Governorate with the National Council for Women. She produced numerous papers that shed light on, and analyzed, gender inequalities and discrimination against women.
She is remembered fondly by colleagues, students and friends.
