Supporting feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements to thrive, to be a driving force in challenging systems of oppression, and to co-create feminist realities.
Around the world, feminist, women’s rights, and allied movements are confronting power and reimagining a politics of liberation. The contributions that fuel this work come in many forms, from financial and political resources to daily acts of resistance and survival.
AWID’s Resourcing Feminist Movements (RFM) Initiative shines a light on the current funding ecosystem, which range from self-generated models of resourcing to more formal funding streams.
Through our research and analysis, we examine how funding practices can better serve our movements. We critically explore the contradictions in “funding” social transformation, especially in the face of increasing political repression, anti-rights agendas, and rising corporate power. Above all, we build collective strategies that support thriving, robust, and resilient movements.
Our Actions
Recognizing the richness of our movements and responding to the current moment, we:
Create and amplify alternatives: We amplify funding practices that center activists’ own priorities and engage a diverse range of funders and activists in crafting new, dynamic models for resourcing feminist movements, particularly in the context of closing civil society space.
Build knowledge: We explore, exchange, and strengthen knowledge about how movements are attracting, organizing, and using the resources they need to accomplish meaningful change.
Advocate: We work in partnerships, such as the Count Me In! Consortium, to influence funding agendas and open space for feminist movements to be in direct dialogue to shift power and money.

In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
The main focus of our work is global. We also work closely with members and other women’s rights organizations and allies at the local, national and regional levels so that their realities inform our work.

Laura était une activiste et une avocate de premier plan qui a mené une campagne courageuse en faveur de la dépénalisation du travail du sexe en Irlande.
On se souvient d'elle comme « une combattante de la liberté pour les travailleurs et les travailleuses du sexe, une féministe, une mère pour certainEs et une amie nécessaire pour beaucoup ».
Laura militait pour que les personnes de l'industrie du sexe soient reconnu-e-s comme des travailleurs et travailleuses sujets de droits. Elle a activement milité en faveur de la dépénalisation, notamment en engageant une procédure judiciaire devant la haute cour de Belfast qui concernent des dispositions criminalisant l’achat de services sexuels. Laura a déclaré que son intention était de porter l'affaire devant la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme.

Con más de 4.000 participantes, el 15º Foro Internacional de AWID en 2024 fue una fuerza colectiva arrolladora de resistencia frente a la opresión, apostando a la sanación y la liberación compartida. Mantente atente a este espacio para más historias del foro y futuras actualizaciones.
El Consejo Directivo de AWID tomó la difícil decisión de cancelar el 14° Foro Internacional que estaba programado para realizarse del 20 al 23 de septiembre de 2021 en la ciudad de Taipei.

Dado el complejo mundo que enfrentamos hoy, el Foro de AWID 2016 no se centró en un ‘tema’ en particular, sino en la creación de formas más efectivas de trabajar juntxs.
Pese a las dificultades del contexto en el que se celebró este Foro (la epidemia del virus del Zika, una huelga de lxs trabajadorxs del servicio exterior brasileño, el juicio político a la presidenta Dilma Rousseff y la crisis que le siguió), se logró congregar a más de 1800 participantes de 120 países y territorios de todas las regiones del mundo.
Lo que sucedió en el 13º Foro internacional de AWID:
Para el 96% de lxs participantes que respondieron a la encuesta de evaluación posterior al Foro, el evento fue una importante fuente de inspiración y energía.
El 98% de lxs participantes lo consideraron un importante espacio de convocatoria para los movimientos feministas, y manifestaron su esperanza de que AWID continúe organizado estos foros.
El 59% de quienes respondieron a la encuesta de evaluación del Foro declaró estar muy satisfechx con el Foro y el 34% algo satisfechx.
Se realizaron más de 150 sesiones en distintos formatos sobre diversos temas, desde la integridad y la libertad corporal, pasando por la violencia de género en el ámbito laboral, hasta estrategias de construcción de poder colectivo.
El primer Foro de Feminismos Negros, se celebró justo antes del Foro de AWID, y reunió a 250 feministas negrxs de todo el mundo, para crear colectivamente un espacio de poder desde donde construir y fortalecer las conexiones intergeneracionales y transnacionales.

El 12° Foro de AWID se llevó a cabo en el año 2012 en Estambul, Turquía, bajo el título “Transformando el Poder Económico para Avanzar los Derechos de las Mujeres y la Justicia”. El Foro 2012 fue el más grande y diverso que hemos organizado hasta la fecha, con la participación de 2239 activistas por los derechos de las mujeres, de 141 países. El 65% provenía del sur global y casi el 15% eran mujeres jóvenes menores de 30 años, mientras que el 75% de las personas asistían a un Foro de AWID por primera vez.
El programa del Foro se enfocó en la transformación del poder económico para promover los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia. Se ofrecieron más de 170 sesiones de lo más diversas, incluyendo las sesiones de la caja de herramientas económicas feministas para forjar habilidades, sesiones interactivas que representaron los 10 temas del Foro, discusiones en profundidad y las mesas redondas de solidaridad.
Aprovechando el impulso del Foro, hemos transformado la página web en un centro de recursos y aprendizaje que se basa en el contenido generado por las participantes mediante recursos multimedia sobre todos los componentes del Foro.

Solo un año después de su fundación, las integrantes de Nadia Echazú comenzaron a trabajar en la alta costura y organizaron un desfile de moda en el histórico Hotel Bauen.
Mostraron cinco modelos y algunas trabajadoras de la cooperativa textil desfilaron con sus propios diseños.
Esto fue revolucionario no sólo porque estaban diseñando alternativas a la moda convencional, sino también porque estaban creando ropa accesible e inclusiva para cuerpos trans y travesti.

La Conférence de Monterrey sur le financement du développement a marqué le début des discussions sur les questions relatives au financement du développement.
Le Consensus de Monterrey a été adopté lors de cette première conférence internationale sur le financement du développement. Il s’agissait de la première réunion au sommet organisée sous l’égide des Nations Unies à traiter des questions financières fondamentales et des problématiques connexes relatives au développement mondial.
La conférence et ses phases préparatoires furent le théâtre d’une coopération sans précédent entre les Nations Unies, la Banque mondiale (BM), le Fonds monétaire international (FMI) et l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC), montrant une partie des efforts entrepris pour promouvoir une cohérence et une homogénéité plus importantes au sein des systèmes et institutions monétaires, commerciaux et financiers internationaux.
Lors de cette conférence, les débats sur le financement du développement ont, pour la première fois, impliqué les gouvernements, des représentant-e-s de la société civile et le secteur privé. Ces acteurs ont porté les discussions au-delà des aspects « techniques » pour traiter des modalités de mobilisation et de canalisation des ressources financières nécessaires à la mise en œuvre des objectifs de développement internationalement convenus auparavant lors des sommets et conférences des Nations Unies des années 1990. Parmi ces objectifs figurent notamment les objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement (OMD).
Le Caucus des femmes a non seulement noté le caractère historique de cette conférence et déclaré que celle-ci pouvait permettre de relever les défis structurels qui continuaient à ralentir le développement, mais il a aussi souligné les inquiétudes engendrées par les conséquences de la militarisation croissante et de la montée des fondamentalismes à l’encontre des femmes, et ceci malgré le fait que le Consensus de Monterrey considérait que le système économique et financier mondial fonctionnait au profit de toutes et tous.

La lutte pour un monde rempli de lieux de travail exempts de toute forme de discrimination, de stigmatisation et d'exclusion est une lutte noble. Un monde où le travail sexuel est décriminalisé et reconnu comme travail en fait partie intégrante.
Un monde où tous·tes les travailleur·euses ont des conditions de travail sûres, des salaires décents et peuvent jouir des mêmes droits tels que l'accès à la santé, le droit à la retraite, aux congés maladie, aux vacances, à la sécurité de l'emploi et plus encore, quels que soient leur genre, leur race, leur origine ethnique, leur âge ou leurs capacités. Les droits du travail sont des questions féministes, et les syndicats féministes jouent un rôle clé dans la promotion des droits juridiques, du travail et économiques de tous·tes les travailleur·euses, en particulier les travailleur·euses migrant·e·s, les travailleur·euses domestiques, les travailleur·euses informel·les et les travailleur·euses du sexe. The theme of the Fourth High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development, 23-24 March 2010: The Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development: status of implementation and tasks ahead. It had four round tables on: the reform of the international monetary and financial systems; impact of the financial crisis on foreign direct investments; international trade and private flows; and the role of financial and technical development cooperation, including innovative sources of development finance, in leveraging the mobilization of domestic and international financial resources for development.
There was also the informal interactive dialogue involving various stakeholders that focused on the link between financing for development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Sue fue artista, activista y maestra y nació en 1936 en Maryland, Estados Unidos.
Creó arte para mujeres y sobre mujeres. Como lesbiana feminista, y durante un tiempo también separatista, se dedicó a la creación de espacios sólo para mujeres. En 1976 compró tierras que todavía son conservadas por mujeres que van temporariamente a hacer arte. Sue mantuvo una apasionada posición en la protección de las mujeres y las niñas.
Con su innovador enfoque futurista, clásico y antropológico, llenaba cada habitación en la que entraba con su intelecto, su excentricidad auténtica, su ingenio implacable y su humor. Sus ideas acerca de la conciencia y la creatividad siguen inspirando a mucha gente.
